FOR PAINTERS ONLY!!!!!!?

I heard that u can spray hairspray on ur oil pastel drawings on canvases to keep the pastel from smudging....IS THIS TRU??!!! I did a oil pastel drawing and need to know if it ok to do this on my canvas.....
