Why is the external tank white?

The Moon landings have nothing to do with the shuttle, so you're pointless interjections are irrelevant. The external tank on the first couple of shuttle flights was painted white. It was soon realised that this a) wasn't necessary, and b) added weight, so they stopped doing it, leaving the orange foam exposed on all subsequent flights.
