Is it possible to use fiber optics or some sort of micro-conductor to byp lesions in the spinal cord?

Is this even possilbe??? I know that we can use functional MRI to map the brain...could we not do the same with the spinal cord and then byp the lesion with fiber optics or some smaller conductor????
