How do you feel about the so called "prosperity doctrine"?

I do not follow their "name it and claim it" doctrine that treats God like a Big Vending Machine in the Sky. God never promised that His devout followers would drive a gold Cadillac or even be welcomed in polite society. If they would only read what the Bible actually says, they would see that the strongest followers of God lived terrible lives that ended early and badly. They were poor and homeless many times, and died by stoning, lions, crucifixion, being sawed in half and other nasty ways. How does prosperity doctrine account for this?
