Do silver dollars eat more plants when injured?

My ten year old silver dollar who has never taken a bite of my plants is all of a sudden gorging on my live plants. The only reason I can think of for his sudden behavior change is that he somehow ripped the top half of his caudal fin off on an ornament. Do plants have something he needs to regrow his fin?
